Later In Life
Nature based reflection for Later-Life & Care Communities
Gentle, accessible nature experiences
Heart & Earth offers calm, nature-based experiences designed specifically for later-life settings, including care homes, retirement communities and supported living environments. These sessions bring the restorative qualities of nature into accessible outdoor spaces or, where needed, adapted indoor settings using natural materials, plants and sensory elements.
The focus is on presence, gentle engagement and meaningful connection, rather than exercise or performance.
Why nature matters in later life
Research suggests that even brief, sensory contact with nature can support emotional steadiness, attention and social connection in older adults. Time in nature can:
-
Support a sense of calm and emotional regulation
-
Stimulate the senses and gently evoke memory
-
Encourage small moments of social interaction and shared experience
-
Offer moments of dignity, agency and enjoyment outdoors
Sessions are designed to be inclusive, adaptable and respectful of individual needs and energy.
What a session may include
Depending on the setting, a session may include:
-
Slow, seated or short-distance outdoor engagement in gardens or courtyards
-
Sensory invitations using leaves, flowers, soil, water and natural textures
-
Simple reflective prompts and shared conversation at a gentle pace
-
Seasonal themes that connect with memory, rhythm and local nature
The pace is unhurried and responsive to the needs of residents and staff.

Working with care teams
Heart & Earth collaborates with care staff to ensure sessions are appropriate, accessible and aligned with resident wellbeing priorities. Experiences can be delivered as one-off events or as part of a short seasonal series.
